Improved performances all round by Under-12s

The Under-12 Girls and Under-12 Boys kitted up on Sunday for what is now becoming a familiar occurrence at the Ipswich Basketball Club Head Quarters. While the boys ultimately came out on top, both sides continue to improve thanks to the extra court time.

With both teams full of enthusiasm, the boys scored first with a layup from Woody. The girls responded and the teams traded baskets for the first six minutes before Coach Rob Schatten called a time out. The boys exploded after the timeout and finished the first quarter with a 14-4 lead, ending with a jump shot at the buzzer by Elliot.

To start the second quarter the boys scored four unanswered points including two free throws from Charlie. However, the girls continued with their boundless determination and pleased Coach Liz Thurlow as they put into practise what they had learnt in training.

Deanna, who has only been with the club a few weeks, scored a layup which fired her team into scoring eight straight points to win the second quarter 8-4. Lauren shone with six points in the first half and showed her usual leadership qualities by rallying her team at half time.

All was to play for at the start of the third quarter with the boys holding a lead of only 6 points. The teams traded baskets and it was Charlie and Kalen who proved invaluable for the boys’ team. At the end of the third quarter, the boys led 32-16.

With both coaches focusing on defensive intensity, the fast-paced game continued with both teams showing true conviction and spirit. Shannai dominated in the fourth quarter with her outstanding defence stealing the ball multiple times for her team and scoring four points as a result. It was not enough to stop the boys running out eventual winners, however, with a final score line of 42-21.

Lauren summed up the game perfectly: “It was so much fun.”
