The Under-16 Girls secured an emphatic win at Oaklands on Saturday, emerging 89-32 victors over Oaklands Wolves.
Coming off the back of a double success over Surrey Goldhawks last week, Ipswich knew they were going to have another tough weekend, again playing two games.
Offensively, Ipswich looked strong on Saturday, with great ball movement and everybody contributing. Coach Hayley Rigby was missing one or two players through injuries, so other players needed to step up and some of the younger players selected responded well, establishing themselves well within the team. Scoring was lead by Ella Pearson, who dropped 27 points, supported by Susannah Rafiu (18), Tash Jarvis (16) and Abbie Yorke (10).
The girls continued their successful weekend with another away win on Sunday, taking down Southend Swifts 62-59.
The game started with Ipswich putting together an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the game. Southend then found their rhythm and were trading baskets with the away team which lead to Ipswich leading the first quarter by five, which they stretched to an 11 point lead going into the half.
Ipswich were able to maintain this until the last two minutes of the game, where a change in Southend’s intensity helped the hosts get within three. Composure from the Ipswich team in the last minute helped secure a vital victory. Scoring was lead by Susannah Rafiu with 20 points, Abbie Yorke adding 11 and Ella Pearson scoring 10.
“Overall, it was a very successful weekend for the girls,” said Coach Rigby, whose team have now won four games in eight days. “These are two big wins, which see us currently sitting second in the table.
“Even though the season is far from over, the team have great momentum heading into the next few weeks, which look to be vital in the race to the playoffs.”
