IBA Copleston opened the 2017-18 WEABL season in style with a 65-53 victory over league newcomers John Madejski Academy.

Maya Price put up an impressive 27 points along with 15 rebounds and four blocks, while Ashleigh Pink had 15 points and 10 assists for her own double-double.

Copleston led by eight points at the end of the first, but the visitors’ outside shooting and strong defence kept them in contention – heading into half-time down 11 at 33-22.

An injury to Pink kept her sidelined for much of the second half with the momentum swinging in favour of JMA as Noa Sanchez-Marques scoring eight straight points to cut the gap.

Price continued to dominate inside before Pink returned to the game with a seven-point blitz to help Copleston keep their opponents at bay and complete an opening win.

“In all honesty, this wasn’t great from us today – and the girls know that,” commented Head Coach, Nick Drane.

“JMA were well coached, tough and talented. But I think we made hard work of it and we have a lot of work to do to get to where we want to be.

“Today we had a full roster, with four players with international experience, and I think we looked a little flat – which is interesting for the first game of the season.

“However, there are still a ton of positives, I thought our first years stepped up and were excellent today – especially during the period where we were without Ash.”

Sanchez-Marques led the visitors with 17 points with Romens adding 15 in the team’s debut.

JMA’s next game is at home to CoLA, while Copleston travel to the same opposition with both games taking place next month.
