Ipswich under-18 Men’s team played hosts to Brentwood Leopards on Sunday afternoon at Copleston School.
Tip was delayed due to a court booking error. But once the game got underway Ipswich found it hard to get into their rhythm and were made to work hard for their eventual 79:45 victory.
Ipswich big man, Jonny Hall, powered his way to become top scorer with 22 points. Captain Tom brown hit 13 of his 15 in the final period.
Scores were close in the first quarter with the home side only 2 up 16:14.
A change of offensive tactics enabled Ipswich to score 29 points in the second aligned with tough defense holding Leopards to just 8 in response.
Ipswich used all of their bench players freely for the rest of the game, including under-16 Ben Winter and under-15 Troy Huggins, making his under-18s debut as replacement for the injured Ben Mobee.
“It was tough going to start with,” said Coach Girling. “We weren’t challenged in our previous game with Leopards and I guess the boys thought it would be an easy game.
“Leopards worked hard to get good scoring opportunities and made the most of them with some great outside shots.
“Rahman Rafiu had an outstanding game – third top scorer with 11 and three huge blocked shots. He has been showing improvement in matches recently and today his game really came together. I’m really pleased for him”.
Hall finished with a game-high 22 points and was followed by Brown’s 15, Rafiu with 11, and Blake Read with 10.
The under-18s have a week off next week then have a home fixture against local rivals, Essex Blades from Colchester the following week.
