Academy Girls end 2016 with defeat

City of London Academy managed to stay perfect so far this season with a 64-42 win over an under strength Copleston side who as usual, played hard for forty minutes.

CoLA were led in scoring by Toyosi Abiola with 19 points, Ire Ozzy-Momodu with 14 and Esther Oluade with very strong play off the bench with 6 key points in the second half. Copleston were led by the sharp shooting Grace Sinnott who finished with 12 points and 11 points from Jasmine Tebbit.

The game started off a back and forth affair with Ashleigh Pink, consistently one of the best players in the WEABL and arguably the most dominant Point Guard running the show for the side from Suffolk early on. The first quarter saw Copleston match every run CoLA made, it was only back to back triples from Ibs Oyedeji to finish the period gave the London outfit a narrow 17-14 lead.

The second quarter saw CoLA step up their defence, forcing a number of turnovers which led to easy transition scores from dynamic guards Kadija Conteh and Toyosi Abiola extending CoLA’s lead to 13 at the half time break.

Again the third period was about CoLA’s defence and Copleston finding it difficult to score around the basket, some excellent shooting from Grace Sinnott kept the game competitive going into the last period, however early hustle plays from Esther Oluade at the start of the fourth saw CoLA take a twenty two point win going into the Christmas break.

Abiola said: “I don’t think either team will be happy with today’s performances, I guess it’s coming up to the end of the year, both teams seemed quite tired and both made quite a few mistakes.

“Usually when we play Copleston it’s a battle from start to finish, I felt like neither team really looked like ourselves today.

“We’ll take the win of course and come back after the holidays with a refreshed and ready to finish the season out in a positive manner.”

The sides can now look forward to a nice break over Christmas before CoLA resume with away game against Rydens College on Jan 18th whilst Copleston will make the trip to Greig City Academy on the same date.
